So, we're back from our hectic & fun week of travels to Austin, Peoria & Chicago and back to our trusty weekly menus...and boy do we need it.  Between Austin's great BBQ and Tex-Mex and Chicago's Italian Beef's & Deep Dish we feel like we've been on all-meat diets for the past 9 days...yikes!  So while we're starting the week off with what I'll call healthy-comfort food (you gotta ease-in from the vacation food, ya know?), the rest of the week is focused on being healthy, light and meat free.

If you haven't made the DIY roasted rapini & cherry tomatoes yet it's one of our favorite easy veggies.  Just get a head of broccoli rabe/rapini, chop off the thick stalks and then rinse & chop up the leafy greens.  Throw them onto a deep roasting pan (covered with foil for easy clean-up), cherry tomatoes and season liberally with olive oil, garlic powder, salt & pepper and roast at 400 for about 15 minutes, stirring half way through.  Everything is done when the greens are wilted and starting to get a bit crispy and some of the tomatoes start to explode.  Yum.

I apologize...but you're on your own this week!  As you can see from above I'm traveling all week.  Of course, all of this travel means lots of good eating and exploring.  I've posted/will post our itineraries for both Austin & Chicago, so take a look here on the Gastronomic Globe Trotting page. If I'm missing anything you would recommend in either city I'd love to hear about it so I can try to add it in.    I'll add updates to each itinerary post when I return to let you know which ones were winners and which I would recommend you skip if you're heading to either city yourself sometime soon.

So, we didn't quite make our 7 nights without eating out last week, sad and pathetic, I know.  But that means we have some risotto leftovers to use up this week.  We also have some leftover porcini paste from the risotto recipe that I want to use up so we're going to use it for a ravioli filling...totally DIY, so if it turns out any good I'll share the recipe!  But basically I'm just mixing it with mascarpone, Parmesan, salt, pepper & fresh parsley.  Put it inside some homemade pasta sheets and slather it with a sauce using some leftover spicy turkey sausage we have and canned roasted tomatoes.   The meatball recipe is one of our favorites that we've been making for years...healthy & delicious!

I love fall...the weather, Christian happy that football is back and the food that it inspires me to make.  Warm, soul satisfying dishes.  So that's what this week is about, the return of fall.  A new slow cooker meal to start the week off, our favorite roasted veggie side with our standard Monday fish dish, a hearty vegetarian egg dish and then a slow-cooked and deeply flavored risotto.  All while being pretty darn healthy if I do say so myself (even the risotto only has 2 TBS of butter!).  And you'll notice we don't have an "eating out" night built in as we usually do...we're trying to cut back for the next couple of weeks since we have trips to Austin & Chicago at the end of this month where we'll do a lot of eating out...but feel free to bump one of the dishes to next week if you don't need all 7 meals.  Enjoy!

Happy Labor Day Weekend everyone!  While most of the country is sad that summer is over, those of us in San Francisco are celebrating Labor Day knowing that our summer is just about to start...clear skies & warmer weather are hopefully just around the corner for us.  If we get at least one good enough BBQ day in the city this weekend, Christian and I will be making one last round of summer corn on the cob and Blue-Cheese stuffed burgers topped with sauteed onions and mushrooms  out at Chrissy Field on the waterfront near our house.  If not, we'll just move the BBQ indoors onto my cast iron grill pan! What are you doing this weekend?  I love to hear the different food traditions from around the country for this classic American holiday so if you're having a celebration share your menu for all of us to see...

The menu is a bit bare bones for those of you using it this week since we're heading down to San Diego to see our good friends Nancy & Adam and our little sister Katrin.  But fear not! There are 8 months of archived menus to dig back through for other ideas for the weekend if you're interested.

Both of the dishes we are making this week are old-time favorites of ours...the first one from our Almost Meatless cookbook (this is the cover recipe) and the second one actually comes from the book Animal Vegetable Miracle...which if you haven't read yet you definitely should!  It's an incredibly inspiring book and it has lots of good recipes throughout...we add grilled shrimp to this one to add a bit of protein, but otherwise it's fantastic.

This week we have pretty light and mostly vegetarian meals since we’re heading to Tahoe to go camping this weekend and I know we’ll have quite a bit of meat for dinner there. All of the links are to the actual recipes I’m using this week except for the Tomato Soup...the recipe I am using is actually from “Slow Cooker: The Best Cookbook Ever,” but I couldn’t find it online. The one I linked to here isn’t a slow cooker recipe and I’ve never used a recipe from this blog, but it looks yummy...so if you try it out let me know how it is!

So, Christian has decided to fully commit himself to training for an Olympic distance triathlon...he’s been considering it for a while, but this week he’s decided it’s go-time! He’s done one sprint distance triathlon in the past with great results (especially considering he didn’t really train for the swimming or running!) and I’m sure he’ll kill this one too. Very exciting! So what does that mean for the weekly dinner menus? While I certainly think they’ve always been pretty healthy and balanced they’ll have to get even healthier! Not sure exactly how yet or what that means but we’ll learn as Christian gets deeper into his training...so stay tuned. In the meanwhile, enjoy my attempt at a lighter menu this week.

I'm excited about this week's menu...it's a little meat-heavier than usual but I've been making my way through my stack of Bon Appétit and Food & Wine Magazines and these recipes rose to the top.  So be it!

For the BLT, it was honestly the editor's letter to the August 2011 Bon Appétit magazine that inspired me...I can't seem to find it online but it should still be on newsstands so pick yourself up a copy.  The essence of it is that a BLT can be an amazing sandwich if you use unique and uber-fresh ingredients...and when it comes to amazing tomatoes now is the time to strike (heirloom, please!).  Be creative with the lettuces (arugula?), bread, and mayo/dressing too.  Lastly, don't skimp on the bacon get some of the good stuff from your local butcher shop, not the grocery store.  And if you want to add your favorite cheese, go for it!  Isn't your mouth watering just at the thought of it?

So you’ll notice there’s a repeat this week from last week....that’s because we ended up going to Sacramento for 2 nights so we didn’t end up making it but still have all of the ingredients. Otherwise I’m pretty excited to try out this new slaw recipe from this month’s Bon Appétit and to bring one of our old summertime favorites back with this gnocchi and zucchini recipe from one of our favorite cookbooks - Eating Well in Season.

    For Thursday's dinner, I'm using the term “dirty rice” loosley.  I typically don’t have chicken livers on hand (which is what puts the "dirty" in dirty rice.) so I just use leftover rice and mix it together with cooked sausage, ground chicken or beef or shrimp and some seasonings...usually including a bit of tomato paste, chili flakes and garlic.  I often throw in whatever veggies I have on hand to use them up as well.
